We are delighted to present ‘Map the Korea’, the 5th 4482 [sasapari] exhibition, where once again the diverse voices of sixty-four Korean contemporary visual artists come together at Bargehouse, OXO tower Wharf, London. As an annual showcase for Korean artists based in the UK, 4482 [sasapari] is a site for gathering, presenting and recording the energetic activity of Korean contemporary art in the UK.

Since its birth in 2007, 4482 exhibition has claimed to hold the features of connectivity, multiplicity and unlimited expansion of creative experiments by an increasing number of Korean artists in London. 4482 is the combination of international calling codes of the UK (44) and Korea (82); [sasapari] is the pronunciation of 4482 in Korean. 4482 is now well on its way to becoming a representative cultural brand of Korea.

Within the cross-cultural dialogue, a wide variety of themes, ways of expression and mediums in the show have been archived for the last five years. This year, based on the existing values, the 5th 4482 exhibition attempts to map the topography of Korean contemporary art in the UK and further in the global art scene. The idea of “mapping” here emphasises performative and continuous multiple layers of process and movement, rather than merely conventional concepts of mapping such as tracing and reproducing.

The exhibition presents five selected themes- Object, Site, Time, Subjectivity and Method; often discussed concepts in contemporary art and also the basic elements of mapping- to bring diversity and contemporareity to the exhibition. Reflecting the experiences of conflicts, compromises and relationships in the foreign culture, the artists’ speculations and philosophy will unfold together through their unique ways in 140 works of various media including painting, sculpture, photography, installation, performance and video. The exhibition will be held under the auspices of the Korean Cultural Centre UK. [End.]
